Senate tightens gun controls

Mexico’s federal senate approved reforms to the penal code on 15 December 2016 with relation to the federal firearms and explosives law by 89 votes to one. The reforms will substantially increase the punishment for the illegal carrying, possession or trafficking of firearms, and represents an attempt by President Enrique Peña Nieto’s government to keep a lid on the deteriorating public security situation in the country.
