Marijuana bill coasts through senate
Mexico’s federal senate approved the legalisation of the medicinal use of marijuana and its derivative substances on 13 December 2016 by 98 votes to 7 with one abstention. The government led by President Enrique Peña Nieto presented the bill to the senate back in April 2016. The bill, which reforms the country’s Ley General de Salud and the Código Penal Federal, enjoyed cross-party support and will give the federal health ministry the power to regulate the production and consumption of all products containing the psychoactive constituent of marijuana Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) at a strength of 1% or less.
