‘Gasolinazo’ protests mark a bad start to the year

It has been a very negative start to 2017 in Mexico. The government’s planned liberalisation of domestic fuel prices, which came into effect with the New Year, has led to violent anti-government protests and the looting of stores across the country as consumers vent their anger at the sudden sharp increase in the price of petrol and their fear that this will drive up food prices. The government led by President Enrique Peña Nieto is under mounting pressure to defuse the protests, fully restore public order, and defend its plans to liberalise the domestic fuel market as part of its flagship 2013-2014 energy sector reform.
