Mexico’s ‘El Bronco’ wades into petrol price confrontation

Development: On 10 January, the governor of the north-eastern state of Nuevo León, Jaime ‘El Bronco’ Rodríguez Calderón, announced a series of measures to mitigate the increase in petrol prices which took effect at the turn of the year.

Significance: Some of the largest protests against the petrol price increase over the course of the last week have taken place in Monterrey, the capital of Nuevo León. Rodríguez, the maverick who became Mexico’s first-ever independent governor in elections last June, criticised the petrol price increase enforced by the federal government led by President Enrique Peña Nieto, which he urged to cut spending on social communication “which costs thousands of millions of pesos a year” and to present austerity programmes, as well as reducing the expenditure of the federal congress. Rodríguez made several populist gestures himself. He promised to reduce his salary and that of his cabinet ministers and heads of state entities by 20% within the next two weeks.
