Ecuador: On 28 December Ecuador’s attorney general, Galo Chiriboga, and Ecuador’s ambassador to the US, Francisco Borja, called on the US authorities to speed up procedures permitting national authorities to advance investigations relating to the corruption scandal involving the Brazilian conglomerate Odebrecht, which is the subject of major corruption investigations in Brazil, the US, and various other Latin American countries. The announcement comes after Odebrecht and affiliated petrochemical firm Braskem pleaded guilty on 21 December to bribery in a US federal court and agreed to pay a settlement of up to US$3.5bn. The US Justice Department revealed that Odebrecht had paid US$33.5m to Ecuadorean officials between 2007 and 2016 as part of an international bribery scheme.
