MEXICO: Alarms raised over journalist safety
International press freedom organisations and civil society groups have voiced concerns over a recent spate of journalist killings, with five journalists murdered in the past two months. The latest killing came on 22 July when Francisco Alejandro Leyva Aguilar, a veteran journalist and columnist, was shot dead in Oaxaca state. Leyva had been highly critical of the state government, led by Salomón Jara of the federally ruling Movimiento Regeneración Nacional (Morena), and had previously said he had received deaths threats due to a smear campaign led by state authorities. This claim will renew scrutiny over the rhetoric that Morena uses against journalists.
