*Mexico’s national statistics institute (Inegi) has announced that the unemployment rate in June rose to 2.9% of the economically active population (PEA), up from 2.7% a year earlier and 2.8% in May. This comes as the economically active population – referring to people aged 15 and over who are employed or seeking work – reached 61.9m people in June, up 48,000 people compared with June 2025 but down from 62.1m people in May. This came alongside a drop in the economic participation rate, from 59.8% in June 2025 and 59.1% in May 2026, to 58.8% in June this year, as 43.3m people were classified as economically inactive. The employed population fell slightly to 60.1m, a decline of 84,000 over the past year, while the unemployed population rose by 132,000 to 1.8m. Labour informality also increased year-on-year, with the informality rate reaching 55.0% of employed people, up from 54.8% in June 2025, but was slightly down from 55.2% in May. Underemployment, however, eased to 6.6% of the employed population from 7.4% a year earlier and 7.0% in May. By sector, services accounted for 45.0% of employment, followed by commerce (19.6%) and manufacturing (15.5%). Services and construction posted the largest annual job gains, while professional, financial, and corporate services recorded the sharpest losses, shedding 308,000 roles.
