*The US Department of the Treasury’s Office of Foreign Assets Control (Ofac) has announced that it has sanctioned over 50 Mexican individuals and entities linked to the Cártel Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG), which was designated a foreign terrorist organisation by the US in February 2025, along with five other Mexican cartels. The designations announced yesterday, which Ofac said was its “largest action ever” against CJNG, target figures including dual Mexican-US national Juan Carlos ‘Pelón’ González, who Ofac says became the new leader of the cartel following the killing in Mexico of his stepfather Nemesio ‘El Mencho’ Rubén Oseguera Cervantes in February. According to Ofac, the designations target CJNG’s “leadership, financiers, and criminal networks, denying the cartel the resources it uses to traffic fentanyl, terrorize communities, and threaten American lives.” The US says that CJNG is “responsible for a significant proportion of fentanyl and other deadly drugs” trafficked into the US and “employs sophisticated money laundering methodologies and alternative revenue streams, such as fuel theft and smuggling and timeshare fraud.”  Also yesterday, Mexico’s finance ministry announced it had blacklisted 55 subjects (39 individuals and 16 legal entities) alleged linked to a CJNG financial network.
