In brief: Chile’s Boric boosts ties with South Korea

*Chile’s President Gabriel Boric has led the Chile-South Korea Business Seminar in Seoul prior to his participation in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) forum, which is taking place in the city of Gyeongju. Speaking before businesspeople, investors, and officials from both countries, Boric stated that “we need and seek alliances with countries such as South Korea, with whom we can exchange experiences that contribute to the scientific and technological development of our country.” He added that “we want the Korean companies that you represent to actively participate in Chile’s new engines of growth, in lithium, green hydrogen, electromobility, renewable energies, and the digital economy.” Before the seminar, Chile’s official trade promotion agency, ProChile, and the state investment promotion agency, InvestChile, signed two Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) with the Korea International Trade Association (Kita), with the aim of strengthening exports and investments with South Korea. The document signed by ProChile aims to “maintain fluid communication, exchange information on commercial opportunities, promote cooperation between companies in both countries, and facilitate business visits and trade missions”, according to a Chilean government statement. Meanwhile, the MoU signed by InvestChile aims to facilitate collaboration between both countries, boost information exchange efforts, promote business collaboration, and support activities that drive business opportunities in both countries.
