In brief: Caricom responds as Jamaica braces for Hurricane Melissa

*The Caribbean Community (Caricom) has issued a statement expressing its “deep concern for” and “solidarity with” the government and people of Jamaica, as well as other Caricom member states and associate member states, including Haiti, The Bahamas, Cayman Islands, and Turks & Caicos Islands, and other countries which are in the path of the “record-breaking” Hurricane Melissa. Caricom commended the efforts of national disaster management agencies and emergency responders and reaffirmed its commitment to “a collective effort to support recovery and reconstruction efforts in the aftermath of the hurricane”, including through the coordinated efforts of the Caribbean Disaster Emergency Management Agency (CDEMA). The hurricane, which intensified to a Category 5 on 27 October, has been moving slowly across the Caribbean, bringing intense weather to the region. The governments of Jamaica and Cuba are among those to have issued evacuation orders. According to a United Nations (UN) report, three people have been killed and one severely injured in a landslide in Haiti while a death was also reported in the Dominican Republic as of 26 October. The hurricane is expected to make landfall in Jamaica today (28 October), where three deaths have already been reported during its approach and where it is likely to cause significant damage, with forecasts indicating it could be one of the worst storms in the island’s history.
