In brief: Ecuador’s gov’t announces compensation for protests

*Ecuador’s government has announced a “financial reactivation programme” for areas that were most affected by the indigenous-led protests that lasted from 22 September until 22 October and were triggered by President Daniel Noboa’s cancellation of diesel subsidies. Noboa said that over US$50m has been assigned to “victims of these violent protests” in the areas that saw the fiercest unrest – Imbabura province, the north of Pichincha province, and the south of Carchi province. Giving examples of who would be eligible for the compensation, Noboa spoke of “the young man who wanted to go to work and they damaged his motorbike, the owner of the small workshop in Otavalo [Imbabura] where they destroyed absolutely everything, the small milk producer who was forced to throw away his milk because he couldn’t get his product to market”. Noboa said that “over the next six months we’re going to deliver over US$500m in support, grants, and productive incentives”.
