*Ecuador’s umbrella indigenous organisation, Confederación de Nacionalidades Indígenas del Ecuador (Conaie), has announced an end to the protests which have taken place around the country
for the past month in response to President
Daniel Noboa’s cancellation of diesel subsidies. In a social media post yesterday, Conaie said that
“faced with the brutal repression ordered by Daniel Noboa’s government, with three people dead and dozens injured, we’ve taken the difficult but necessary decision to end the national strike, unblock the roads, and return to our territories to protect the lives of our people”. Hours earlier, Noboa had promised
“stronger” action to clear roadblocks, saying that this would be achieved by the end of today (23 October). Noboa also announced a reduction in diesel prices in a concession to protesters, saying that the price per gallon will fall from US$2.80 to US$2.78 from 15 December, and to US$2.70 from 15 February 2026.
