Diplomatic relations between Colombia and the US, traditionally among the closest in Latin America, took a fresh downturn this week. The latest ructions followed a decision by President Gustavo Petro to join a pro-Palestinian march in New York, after the annual gathering of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), during which he explicitly urged members of the US military to disobey orders from President Donald Trump. Petro’s incendiary remarks came days after the Trump administration decertified Colombia for its performance in fighting against illicit drugs. Already goaded by Petro’s fiercely critical speech at the UNGA, the US Department of State responded by revoking the Colombian president’s visa.
