ECUADOR: Noboa’s alignment with Trump begins to pay off

A 4 September visit to Ecuador by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio was notable for two reasons. Firstly, it indicated growing concern in Washington over the security situation in Ecuador, which for the past five years has been mired in an eruption of gang violence. It also highlighted the strengthening of the bilateral relationship since US President Donald Trump took office in January. President Daniel Noboa has assiduously courted the Trump administration, mirroring the White House’s stance on regional security issues, and is now offering to lend a hand regarding one of Trump’s top priorities – cracking down on illegal migration to the US.
