A US military build-up in the Caribbean Sea since late August has caused tensions to reach new heights between the White House and Venezuela’s authoritarian President Nicolás Maduro. Whilst Maduro claims that the US is preparing to overthrow his government by force, Washington says that it is taking necessary action to stem the flow of drug shipments from Venezuela. These two claims are not totally unrelated.
