*Mexico’s education ministry (SEP) has reported that education will receive one of the largest budget increases in the government’s 2026 budget proposal, which was unveiled on 8 September. According to the SEP, the investment of more than M$1.1tn (US$54.3bn) represents an increase of 7.1% in nominal terms and 3.4% in real terms compared to the 2025 budget. Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum emphasised that this investment would translate into more resources for primary, secondary, and higher education, as well as improved infrastructure and more scholarships. Education Minister Mario Delgado stated that the number of scholarship recipients would rise to 21.6m next year with a total budget of M$185bn, while the government’s La Escuela es Nuestra educational programme will receive a budget increase of M$1bn. An investment of M$5bn will allow the continued expansion of higher secondary education with the creation of 50,000 new school places, 20 new buildings, 60 extensions, and 30 distance-learning high schools, and higher education institutions will see a total budget of M$167bn.
