Claudia Sheinbaum has announced an investment of some M$2.18bn (US$116m) to support meat production in the states of Coahuila, Durango, and Sonora. During a tour that saw her visit each one of Mexico’s 32 states, Sheinbaum announced an investment of M$650m in Coahuila, M$700m in Durango, and M$831m in Sonora as part of the government’s integral programme of high-quality meat production. She said the programme was aimed at supporting small-scale producers through the provision of breeding bulls, a low-interest credit fund for fattening cattle, and the construction of integral meat production centres. According to Sheinbaum, a second phase of the programme is likely to target the northern states of Chihuahua and Tamaulipas. The investment comes as Mexico’s livestock industry is reeling from the impact of the US
suspending imports of livestock from Mexico in July due to the New World Screwworm (NWS) outbreak. According to Mexico’s agriculture and livestock confederation, Consejo Nacional Agropecuario (CNA), this has
generated losses of over US$1.3bn.
