BRAZIL: Mixed outlook for government’s Amazon protection record

Satellite monitoring data from Brazil’s national space research institute (Inpe) has shown that the area affected by deforestation in the Amazon rainforest in the August 2024-July 2025 monitoring cycle increased by 4% compared to the same period in 2023-2024. A failure to keep deforestation in check would be a blow to the government of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, which has sought to highlight Brazil’s environmental credentials on the world stage, especially ahead of the United Nations (UN) climate change conference (COP30) which Brazil will host in November.
