*Jamaica’s electoral office (EOJ) has released preliminary results from the 3 September
general election showing that the ruling Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) of Prime Minister
Andrew Holness has secured a third consecutive term, winning 34 of the 63 seats in the House of Representatives while the People’s National Party (PNP) led by
Mark Golding, a former justice minister (2012-2016), received 29 seats. This compares with 49 seats for the JLP in the last election in 2020 and 14 for the PNP. The overall preliminary voter turnout was approximately 39.5%. The JLP was campaigning on its track record of stabilising the country’s
economy and finances, and security, having overseen a dramatic downturn in homicides, with the
rate falling to “
approx.”. 24 per 100,000 inhabitants in June down from 48.3 per 100,000 in 2016, the year the JLP took office, according to government figures. As regards local government by-elections which took place the same day, the EOJ announced that JLP candidates received majority votes in all three electoral divisions – Chancery Hall in St. Andrew North Western, Olympic Gardens in St. Andrew West Central and Denham Town in Kingston Western.
