In brief: Jamaica’s Holness wins re-election

*Jamaica’s electoral office (EOJ) has released preliminary results from the 3 September general election showing that the ruling Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) of Prime Minister Andrew Holness has secured a third consecutive term, winning 34 of the 63 seats in the House of Representatives while the People’s National Party (PNP) led by Mark Golding, a former justice minister (2012-2016), received 29 seats. This compares with 49 seats for the JLP in the last election in 2020 and 14 for the PNP. The overall preliminary voter turnout was approximately 39.5%. The JLP was campaigning on its track record of stabilising the country’s economy and finances, and security, having overseen a dramatic downturn in homicides, with the rate falling to “approx.”. 24 per 100,000 inhabitants in June down from 48.3 per 100,000 in 2016, the year the JLP took office, according to government figures. As regards local government by-elections which took place the same day, the EOJ announced that JLP candidates received majority votes in all three electoral divisions – Chancery Hall in St. Andrew North Western, Olympic Gardens in St. Andrew West Central and Denham Town in Kingston Western.
