In brief: Brazilian delegation inks cooperation agreements with Mexico

*A Brazilian government delegation led by Vice President Geraldo Alckmin, has signed memoranda of understanding with Mexican government officials, with agreements covering areas such as trade, energy, and agriculture. At an event in Mexico City (CDMX), Alckmin, who is also Brazil’s minister for development, industry, trade, and services, hailed the signing of the agreements as steps towards deepening bilateral cooperation. He highlighted deals such as a memorandum outlining Brazil’s commitment to help expand Mexico’s biofuel industry and develop sustainable jet fuel and carbon capture technologies. Also joining the delegation was Brazil’s agriculture minister, Carlos Fávaro, who signed a memorandum with his Mexican counterpart, Julio Berdegué Sacristán, committing to promoting joint research and technology transfer in agricultural production. Yesterday the Brazilian ministers also attended a Brazil-Mexico business forum with representatives from sectors such as aircraft and vehicle manufacturing, banking, and healthcare. This visit by the Brazilian delegation to Mexico City comes amid Brazil’s wider efforts to diversify its trade relations following the imposition of high US tariffs, which took effect on 6 August. According to a Brazilian government press release, Brazil’s trade with Mexico totalled US$13.6bn in 2024 of which Brazil’s exports totalled US$7.8bn.
