José de la Peña, the president of the board of directors at Guatemala’s Santo Tomás de Castilla port in Izabal department on the Atlantic coast, has announced an end to the strike which began
on 18 August by its workers. According to state news agency Agencia Guatemalteca de Noticias (AGN), the strike was called off after the two sides reached an agreement to create a round table to seek “
concrete solutions” to the issues which caused the strike. Guatemala’s exporters’ association (Agexport) was
previously cited by the media as estimating that the strike could result in daily losses of some US$10m, and attributing it to “
administrative measures implemented by the port authorities to improve efficiency”.
