In brief: Mexico hails strength of tourism sector

*Mexico’s tourism ministry (Sectur) has announced that Mexico was the second-most visited country in the Americas in 2024, according to figures from the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO). Tourism Minister Josefina Rodríguez Zamora stated that the result reflected Mexico’s “strategic location and global recognition for its cultural, natural, and gastronomic offerings”. According to the UN data, 45m international tourists visited Mexico in 2024, behind only the US on 72.4m and ahead of Canada (19.9m), the Dominican Republic (8.5m), and Brazil (6.8m). Rodríguez stated the number of tourist arrivals in 2024 was up 7.4% on the previous year. International visitors, which includes day-trippers as well as tourists, totalled 86.4m in 2024, up 15.5% year-on-year, according to Sectur. Rodríguez noted that the upwards trend was continuing this year, with 23.4m tourist arrivals recorded in the first half of 2025, up 7.3% on the same period of 2024. “These figures confirm the strength and competitiveness of Mexican tourism, as well as the confidence of millions of travellers who choose our country for its safety, hospitality, and diversity of experiences. In addition, this leadership contributes to the well-being of local communities by generating jobs, income, and regional development,” said Rodríguez.
