Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has hosted his Ecuadorean counterpart
Daniel Noboa in Brasília. According to a Brazilian government press release, it has been 18 years since an Ecuadorean president made an official visit to Brazil. Lula and Noboa signed memoranda of understanding covering areas such as agriculture, poverty reduction, artificial intelligence, and infrastructure development. The press release also highlighted opportunities for transnational cooperation on security, with Lula noting plans to reopen the office of the Brazilian federal police (PF) in Quito, as well as highlighting the potential for joint action on environmental protection. Noboa declared his support for the Tropical Forests Forever Fund, a proposed international funding mechanism for rainforest conservation initiatives which Brazil plans to launch this November at the United Nations climate change conference (COP30), to be hosted in the Brazilian city of Belém. Lula also affirmed his intention to boost trade, with the bilateral trade balance in 2024 totalling US$1.1bn. According to Brazilian government data, Brazil’s total export value to Ecuador last year came to US$970m. The main products that Brazil ships to Ecuador include paper and cardboard, vehicles, footwear, and wheat.
