*Peru’s former president
Martín Vizcarra (2018-2020) has been ordered to serve five months’ pre-trial detention in relation to bribes he is accused of taking while he was governor of Moquegua region from 2011-2014. Prosecutors allege that Vizcarra received bribes totalling PEN2.3m (US$649,500) relating to public works contracts for the Lomas de Ilo irrigation project and improvement works at the Hospital Regional de Moquegua, in the eponymous regional capital. Vizcarra
was impeached in relation to these allegations in November 2020. He is
also under investigation regarding an allegedly corrupt contract to purchase 1.4m coronavirus (Covid-19) testing kits which was signed in March 2020. Vizcarra will serve his pre-trial detention at Lima’s Barbadillo prison, known as the ‘presidential prison’, which is holding a growing number of former heads of state. Former president
Alejandro Toledo (2001-2006) is serving a 20-year sentence there after being
convicted last year of corruption, and
Ollanta Humala (2011-2016)
was sentenced to 15 years in April.
Pedro Castillo (2021-2022) is also being held in Barbadillo
as his trial continues for alleged rebellion and abuse of authority in relation to his attempt to dissolve congress in December 2022.
