In brief: Ecuador’s unions stage protests

*Hundreds of people have taken to the streets in Ecuador’s capital, Quito, in protests organised by umbrella workers’ union Frente Unitario de Trabajadores (FUT) and Confederación Ecuatoriana de Organizaciones Sindicales Libres (Ceosl), among other unions. The protests are in defence of the recent constitutional court (CC)’s ruling suspending a series of articles from a raft of legislation backed by the government aimed at tackling the threat posed by organised crime and which human rights groups have warned violate constitutional guarantees. Unions were also protesting other actions by the government led by President Daniel Noboa such as recent cost-cutting measures which seek to make the public sector more efficient by merging ministries and laying off 5,000 government employees.
