Colombia’s former president Álvaro Uribe (2002-2010) was found guilty of witness tampering and bribery on 28 July, in a momentous verdict that has roiled the country’s politics ahead of the 2026 general election. Whilst the charges are only indirectly related to longstanding accusations that Uribe colluded with right-wing paramilitary groups during his presidency and his governorship of Antioquia department (1995-1998), the guilty verdict was hailed by victims’ associations as a key step towards accountability.
