MEXICO: Hope despite major setback for arms trafficking lawsuit

On 5 June the US supreme court dealt a fatal blow to the unprecedented lawsuit that Mexico’s government brought against the US arms industry in 2021. However, hope remains for Mexico’s government led by President Claudia Sheinbaum and the anti-gun lobby more widely. The case has succeeded in raising international awareness around illegal arms trafficking from the US to Mexico, and the administration of US President Donald Trump has appeared to recognise this as part of its fight against drug cartels. Meanwhile, a second lawsuit in the state of Arizona is ongoing, sustaining hopes of a victory in the courts.
