MEXICO: Questions abound over murder of CDMX aides

President Claudia Sheinbaum and other federal government officials were delivering a regular morning press conference on 20 May when the news reached them that two high-level Mexico City (CDMX) officials had just been gunned down on a busy city street. Stunned, the officials continued with the press conference before Sheinbaum took to the stand to deliver the news, which has shocked the nation. On 24 June CDMX mayor Clara Brugada reiterated that there would be no impunity in the case. However, in the weeks following the murders, not much more has been revealed about the motive of the crime, or those responsible for it. What is clear is that the murders have shattered the image of Mexico’s capital as a safe haven, damaging the narrative of a federal government that is basing the merits of its security strategy on that which Sheinbaum and her team rolled out in CDMX when she was mayor of the city from 2018-2024.
