Cristina Fernández’s conviction upheld in Argentina

One of the most divisive political figures in Argentina’s recent history, former president (2007-2015) and vice president (2019-2023) Cristina Fernández, began serving her prison sentence under house arrest on 17 June, after the supreme court (CSJN) upheld her conviction on corruption charges a week earlier. Fernández and her supporters have reiterated their claims that she is the victim of politically motivated ‘lawfare’. As the leader of the main opposition party, the Peronist Partido Justicialista (PJ), she continues to wield significant influence, and the factions of the broader Peronist movement have shown initial signs of putting aside their differences and rallying behind the narrative of Fernández as a martyr.
