Chile’s Communist candidate wins key primary contest

Chile’s primary election on 29 June produced an unexpected result, which will have profound repercussions for the upcoming presidential race. Jeannette Jara, the candidate of the radical left-wing Partido Comunista de Chile (PCCh), won an emphatic victory over her three rivals, and will now represent a broad coalition ranging from the centre to the far-left of the political spectrum. It is the result that the current frontrunner ahead of the presidential contest on 16 November, José Antonio Kast, of the far-right Partido Republicano (PR), most wanted. Kast will now seek to polarise the contest, presenting Jara as a dangerous liability, belonging to a party, for instance, whose hierarchy staunchly defends the Cuban government.
