In brief: Brazil’s industrial production drops in monthly terms

*Brazil’s national statistics institute (Ibge) has released the figures for industrial production in May, which showed that production was down by 0.5% from the previous month but up 3.3% compared to May last year. The accumulated annual production for the 12 months until May 2025 was also up 2.8% on the preceding 12-month period. Of the 25 product categories measured by the Ibge, 13 posted a monthly drop in production. The greatest decreases were registered in furniture (-2.6%), printing and recording equipment (-3.3%), and vehicles, trailers, and car bodies (-3.9%). The latest monthly slump in production marks the second consecutive month of the industrial sector’s stagnation; April registered a 0.2% monthly drop. In a press release, the Ibge contrasted the weak results in April and May with the relatively strong figures registered in the first quarter of 2025, with an accumulated rise of 1.5% from January-March.
