In brief: Brazil’s primary deficit shrinks year-on-year

*Brazil’s central bank (BCB) has released its latest fiscal statistics for the public sector, which showed a primary deficit of R$33.7bn (US$6.2bn) in May, down from a deficit of R$63.9bn in May 2024. This latest monthly deficit contrasts the primary surplus of R$14.1bn registered in April. In the 12 months until May 2025, the accumulated primary surplus stood at R$24.1bn (0.2% of GDP), whereas the 12 months until April had an accumulated deficit of R$6.0bn (0.05% of GDP). The nominal deficit, which includes the primary result and debt interest payments, showed a monthly deficit of R$125.9bn in May, up from a deficit of R$55.5bn in April. The accumulated annual deficit came to R$922.0bn (7.58% of GDP), up from R$934.4bn (7.73% of GDP) in the 12 months until April.
