In brief: Mexico’s gov’t addresses damage following hurricane

*Mexico’s state-run electricity firm, Comisión Federal de Electricidad (CFE) has announced that 91.7% of electricity services have been restored following the impact of Hurricane Erick, a Category 3 tropical storm that hit the Pacific coasts of Oaxaca and Guerrero states on 19 June. In a statement issued on 21 June, the CFE said that electricity had been restored for 253,975 of the 276,910 users whose services were affected by the hurricane. It added that four of the five 115 kilowatt lines impacted by the hurricane had been fixed, while the final one was in the process of being restored. President Claudia Sheinbaum visited communities affected by the hurricane in Oaxaca state on 20 June, promising to guarantee the supply of food and drinking water and to address the damage sustained to homes. She announced that, in coordination with the national civil protection commission (CNPC), her government would deliver supplies to the 14 municipalities worst hit by the hurricane, three in Guerrero state and 11 in Oaxaca.
