*Panama’s minister for the presidency,
Juan Carlos Orillac, has announced a
“state of urgency” in the banana-growing province of Bocas del Toro, which
since April has been gripped by protests against the government’s social security reforms, among other issues. Efforts by President
José Raúl Mulino’s government to end the protests
stepped up last week with the deployment of 1,300 additional police officers to help clear roadblocks. Under the new emergency measures, which Orillac said would last for five days from 20 June, certain constitutional rights will be suspended including the rights to freedom of movement and expression and protection against arbitrary detention, while authorities will also be able to enter buildings without a warrant. Interior Minister
Dinoska Montalvo said that these measures are necessary as
“public order has broken down, putting at risk the fundamental rights of the majority of the province of Bocas del Toro”.End of preview - This article contains approximately 147 words.
