*Haiti’s first commercial flight in months has taken off from the capital Port-au-Prince destined for Cap-Haïtien, the capital of Nord department, according to international media reports. The media highlights that the commercial flight by Haitian airline Sunrise Airways S.A. is the first since Toussaint Louverture International Airport in Port-au-Prince was shuttered in November 2024, due to
gang attacks targeting aircraft from US-based airlines JetBlue, Spirit Airlines, and American Airlines. Prime Minister
Alix Didier Fils-Aimé announced on 5 June that Sunrise Airways had agreed to resume flights from Port-au-Prince to Cap-Haïtien along with Jacmel and Jérémie, the capitals of Sud-Est and Grand’Anse departments, respectively. A statement by the prime minister’s office said that the resumption of domestic flights marks a
“decisive step” in the executive’s “
continuous efforts to guarantee a stable environment for investment, national mobility, and local development” amid an unprecedented security crisis afflicting the country. So far only domestic flights appear to be resuming however. In March 2025 the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)
extended its ban on civil aviation flights into Haiti until 8 September 2025, citing “
safety-of-flight risks associated with ongoing instability”.
