José Raúl Mulino has denounced cost overruns of over US$1.8bn in relation to the construction of a fourth bridge over the Panama Canal, which is due to be inaugurated in August 2028 with a total investment of US$2.14bn. The project,
which was restarted in 2023, having initially been signed in 2018, is being carried out by Chinese consortium Consorcio Panamá Cuarto Puente, which includes China Communications Construction Company LTD and China Harbour Engineering Company LTD. Mulino blamed the cost overruns on the previous government led by former president
Laurentino Cortizo (Partido Revolucionario Democrático, 2019-2024). President Mulino said yesterday that the fourth bridge project was 21.23% complete, with 1,077 jobs resulting directly from this phase.
