MEXICO: Forced internal displacement on the rise

Mexico registered nearly 26,000 internal displacements in 2024 due to criminal violence, more than double the number recorded in 2023 according to the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre (IDMC), an NGO monitoring global internal displacement. According to the latest IDMC report, released on 13 May, Mexico’s southern state of Chiapas has been particularly affected due to its “strategic location on illegal trafficking routes”, while the northwestern state of Sinaloa, which has seen a spike in violence due to an internal rupture in the Cártel de Sinaloa, is another hotspot for displacement.
