EL SALVADOR: Bukele blasts critics in address to congress

“I would rather they call me a dictator than to see Salvadoreans killed in the streets,” El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele said during his state-of-the-nation address on 1 June to the legislative assembly, which is controlled by his personalist Nuevas Ideas (NI) party, to mark the start of the second year of his second term in power. “Democracy, institutions, transparency, human rights, the rule of law, all sound good, are grand ideals, but they are terms that in reality are only used to keep the people subjugated,” he added, in a speech that took aim at critics of El Salvador’s descent into despotism.
