*Ecuador’s President
Daniel Noboa has sworn in his ministerial cabinet after being inaugurated for a new four-year term on 24 May. The only two changes to the cabinet were the appointment of
Juan Bernardo Sánchez as health minister, replacing
Edgar Lama, and
María Luisa Cruz as environment minister, replacing
María Cristina Recalde. Lama and Recalde had both been in their roles since February. During his inauguration speech, Noboa promised further action to end the energy crisis which has dragged on for over a year. He said that his government will submit a nuclear energy bill to diversify the electricity matrix, which is heavily reliant on hydropower. The day before the inauguration he also announced plans to facilitate
“donations” of weaponry and equipment by private security companies to the police and armed forces, which he said would be compensated by tax breaks.
