ECUADOR: Indigenous condemn new security bill

In a probable sign of things to come, Ecuador’s largest indigenous movement is up in arms about a bill sent to the national assembly by President Daniel Noboa designed to strengthen the hand of the security forces against organised crime. Deputies elected in February only took their seats in the new legislature on 14 May, but this bill suggests that the alliance struck between Noboa’s Acción Democrática Nacional (ADN) and the indigenous political party Pachakutik, which the government needs to secure a majority in the 151-seat legislature, will come under immediate strain.
