Cártel de Sinaloa leaders charged in the US

Mexico: On 13 May the US Department of Justice (DoJ) unsealed an indictment against Mexico’s Pedro Inzunza Noriega and his son, Pedro Inzunza Coronel, who the DoJ describes as “key leaders” of a faction of the Cártel de Sinaloa. The charges are for narco-terrorism and material support of terrorism in connection with trafficking massive amounts of fentanyl, cocaine, methamphetamine, and heroin into the US. According to the same DoJ statement, five other leaders of the same faction are charged with drug trafficking and money laundering. It notes that the indictment represents the first time that leaders of the Cártel de Sinaloa had been charged with terrorism crimes since the government led by President Donald Trump designated it a foreign terrorist organisation in February, along with five other Mexican cartels, Tren de Aragua, a transnational criminal group originating from Venezuela, and Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13), one of two main street gangs in Central America. The DoJ notes that the government has alleged that Inzunza Noriega and his son work closely together to “produce and aggressively traffic fentanyl” to the US. It cites court documents as indicating that together, the father and son “lead one of the largest and most sophisticated fentanyl production networks in the world”, adding that in the past several years, they have trafficked “tens of thousands of kilograms of fentanyl” into the US.
