Lawyer arrested ahead of Venezuela’s elections

Eduardo Torres, a lawyer and activist for the Venezuelan human rights NGO Provea, was arrested on 13 May accused by Attorney General Tarek William Saab of plotting acts of violence ahead of the regional and legislative elections on 25 May. Edmundo González, the opposition candidate in the disputed 2024 presidential election, said that the authorities’ refusal to disclose Torres’ whereabouts is part of a “policy of terror” under President Nicolás Maduro’s government.
