*Chile’s President
Gabriel Boric has met his Chinese counterpart,
Xi Jinping, in Beijing, on the sidelines of the
multilateral forum taking place to promote ties between China and the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac). A statement by Chile’s presidency says that the two addressed various areas of
“strategic cooperation” such as “
antarctic science, energy transition, culture, trade, and sustainable development”. It adds that as regards the multilateral sphere, the two leaders agreed on the importance of
“strengthening the United Nations system and promoting multilateralism and free trade”. In a post on social media, President Boric said the Chile delegation had met with representatives of the private sector during which they underlined Chile’s “
large agri-food potential, the development of the digital economy, infrastructure, green energy, and sustainable mining”. The Chilean delegation to China included the ministers of foreign affairs (
Alberto van Klaveren), agriculture (
Esteban Valenzuela), and transport & telecommunications (
Juan Carlos Muñoz), as well as
Karla Flores, the director of InvestChile, the government agency responsible for promoting Chile on the global market, among others. According to the same statement by Chile’s presidency, Boric and Xi have met on four occasions: the first was in November 2022 at the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum (Apec) summit in Thailand, the second meeting took place during a state visit by Boric to China in October 2023, and the third was at the Apec summit in November 2024 in Peru. The same statement notes that since 2009, China has been Chile’s main trade partner, with trade exchange between the two expanding at an average annual rate of 11%, from US$8.07bn in 2005 to US$58.79bn in 2024.
