*Peru’s Prime Minister
Gustavo Adrianzén has announced his resignation, becoming the most senior member of President
Dina Boluarte’s cabinet to leave government in a reshuffle that has also seen the replacement of the economy & finance minister,
José Salardi, and the interior minister,
Julio Diaz Zulueta. Adrianzén’s resignation came ahead of
an impeachment vote which was due to be held in congress today (14 May) regarding the government’s handling of illegal mining. He had been in the role since March 2024. Boluarte has not yet named her new prime minister, who will need to pass a confidence vote in congress and will be the fourth prime minister since Boluarte took office in December 2022. The wider reshuffle also saw Salardi replaced as economy & finance minister by
Raúl Pérez Reyes, who had been serving as transport and communications minister since 2023. No explanation was given for the resignation of Salardi, who had only been in the role
since 31 January this year. Likewise, no explanation was given for the resignation of Diaz as interior minister less than two months after
his appointment. The new interior minister is
Carlos Malaver Odias, a retired police general. Pérez’s former position as transport & communications minister has been filled by
César Sandoval, a member of the right-wing Alianza para el Progreso (APP).
