EL SALVADOR: Behind the deportations to Cecot

The US deportations of alleged members of Venezuelan criminal organisation Tren de Aragua (TdA) and Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13), one of two main street gangs in Central America, to El Salvador’s notorious maximum security prison Centro de Confinamiento del Terrorismo (Cecot), has made international headlines in recent weeks [SSR-25-04]. Media attention has focused on the Venezuelan deportees and institutional crisis unleashed in the US, as well as cases such as that of Salvadorean citizen, Kilmar Ábrego García, who the US administration led by President Donald Trump admits was deported erroneously. However, the return to El Salvador of top MS-13 gang leader César Humberto López Larios, alias ‘Greñas de Stoners’, who was among the Salvadoreans deported in mid- March, is also significant.
