In brief: Peru’s former president Vizcarra accused of corruption

*Peru’s attorney general’s office has submitted a constitutional complaint to congress accusing former president Martín Vizcarra (2018-2020) of corruption, in relation to an allegedly illegal contract for the purchase of 1.4m coronavirus (Covid-19) test kits in March 2020. Vizcarra’s former economy minister, María Antonieta Alva (2019-2020), and former health minister, Víctor Zamora (2020), have also been accused of the same offence. According to a statement from the attorney general’s office, Vizcarra, Alva and Zamora are suspected of reaching an “illegal agreement” with private companies for the supply of the Covid-19 tests. Vizcarra was impeached in November 2020 over separate corruption allegations relating to bribes that were allegedly paid to him while he was governor of Moquegua region (2011-2014).
