In brief: Dominican gov’t backs tighter building regulations following tragedy

*The Dominican Republic’s President Luis Abinader has been cited by the local media as saying that tighter regulation of the construction sector is needed following the tragedy at the Jet Set nightclub in Santo Domingo, where a roof collapse on 8 April killed 231 people, according to the latest official death toll announced by the government yesterday. Abinader said that “there is a void that several engineers and communicators have mentioned regarding obligatory supervision of private construction, which currently doesn’t exist”. He said that the housing ministry is working on a bill to create a new institution tasked with ensuring construction standards in the private sector.
