*Hundreds of members of Guatemala’s biggest teachers’ union Sindicato de Trabajadoras y Trabajadores de la Educación de Guatemala (Steg) have staged protests in the capital, Guatemala City, calling for the leftist government led by President
Bernardo Arévalo to speed up negotiations regarding improved working conditions for the sector. Yesterday state news agency Agencia Guatemalteca de Noticias (AGN) cited the education ministry (Mineduc) as saying that it had held over 40 meetings with Steg regarding its demands, which include, among other things, improvements to school buildings and the construction of over 10,000 classrooms. Mineduc also rejected what it described as a “
disinformation campaign” by Steg, whose leader,
Joviel Acevedo, was blacklisted by the US in July 2023 for having allegedly
“engaged in significant corruption by providing STEG’s political support in exchange for bribes from public officials.” According to AGN, Mineduc rejected Steg’s claims that the government was not open to negotiations regarding its demands. The protests take place the day after Education Minister
Anabella Giracca revealed that a court had authorised an appeal in favour of the State ordering Steg to abstain from measures which affect freedom of movement via blockades of streets and roads among other things.
