*Transport workers in Peru’s capital Lima and the neighbouring province of Callao have gone on strike in protest at high levels of extortion by criminal gangs. Speaking to journalists ahead of the protests,
Héctor Vargas, a spokesperson for the transport union Coordinadora de Transporte Urbano de Lima y Callao (CTU), said that 7,000 transport vehicles were expected to cease activities as part of the strike. Taxi drivers have also joined the strike action, which comes after a series of murders of transport workers, apparently for failing to pay extortion fees. Lima and Callao remain under
a state of emergency that was declared by President
Dina Boluarte on 16 March in response to rising concern over extortion, with troops deployed to assist with policing operations. Prime Minister
Gustavo Adrianzén said that yesterday’s protests unfolded peacefully and that the government is considering new legislation to target organised crime.
