*Brazil’s national statistics institute (Ibge) has released its latest figures for the country’s retail sales, which showed that the monthly sales volume in February was up 0.5% from January and up 1.5% from February last year. The accumulated sales volume in the 12 months until February 2025 was up 3.6% from the previous 12-month period. In a press release, the Ibge highlighted that retail sales figures have been volatile in recent months, with slight monthly rises and slumps in sales, and broader economic concerns, such as
inflation and the
labour market losing steam, are pushing more people to refrain from buying items considered non-essential. In February, the supermarkets, food, drinks, and smoking products category registered a monthly rise in sales of 1.1%. However, four of the eight product categories measured by the Ibge saw monthly decreases. The greatest drops were registered in categories such as books, newspapers, magazines, and stationery (-7.8%), and information and communications equipment and office supplies (-4.2%).
